The European Market has been the Saturday spine of downtown since 2003, and the 2026 season is the market's 23rd year. It runs Saturdays May 2 through October 31, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Broadway and Third Street, next to Thomas Centennial Park, which puts it about two miles south of the Indiana Dunes at Lake Michigan.
If you have only been once, the "European" branding undersells what actually shows up. Vendors travel from Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois, and the mix on the ground includes pretzels and pierogi, baked goods from the Sisters of Notre Dame with proceeds going to their outreach programs, crafted goods, farm produce, and garden plants. Live musicians rotate through the aisles, and the market is dog friendly when leashed.
A practical note for locals: the market is at 100 Broadway, and it draws visitors from I-94 Exit 26A and the 80/90 Toll Road Exit 31. If you live within walking distance, walk. The Saturday parking around Third fills quickly once the 9 a.m. crowd arrives.
The routine that turns a market into a habit
The reason residents come back weekly is not the pierogi. It is that the stall roster shifts. The reason this matters is scheduling. If you have kids who fade at 9 p.m., the concerts are early enough. If you have out-of-town guests staying through the weekend, the movie nights give you a Wednesday evening plan that costs nothing beyond popcorn refills.

Golden Leaf Cigar Bar is the after-dinner room downtown. Regulars point to the house brand WP Cigars and the spirits selection, and it is the kind of place that fills the space between a Flat Rock set and a slow walk back to the car.
Biggby Coffee at 3091 Village Point runs Cars and Coffee with the Boost Crew on Sunday mornings, including Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 9 a.m. That is the natural bookend for a market Saturday. Market on Saturday, Cars and Coffee on Sunday, both walkable from the Village Point side of town.
The off-season is not actually off
The trap with any lifestyle piece about a summer market town is that it makes the other seven months look empty. Chesterton's calendar does not cooperate with that framing.
The European Market goes indoors in winter at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center on January 17 and February 14 and 28, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with 40 vendors, food, decor, cozy winter gifts, and interpretive programming about the Dunes and its birds and animals. The address is 1215 N. State Road 49 in Porter, which is a five-minute drive from downtown Chesterton.
The 9th Annual Corkscrew and Brew runs Saturday, March 14, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m. at Thomas Centennial Park, gathering local wineries and breweries for a spring tasting. That is the same park lawn you were sitting on in July, now with a coat on.
Downtown Trick-or-Treating happens Friday, October 30, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the Duneland Chamber and local merchants handing out candy. The Twilight Christmas Parade steps off at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2026 at Thomas Centennial Park, preceded by festive carriage rides through downtown and closing with Santa arriving on a fire truck.
Add the winter markets, Corkscrew and Brew, and the parade to your summer routine and you end up with a downtown calendar that has fewer than a dozen dead Saturdays a year. That is unusual for a town this size, and it is the underrated reason people who live in Chesterton tend to stay in Chesterton.
